Professional Biography

Hanan Salem is the Research Coordinator for the Kids FACE FEARS (Kids Face-to-face And Computer Enhanced Formats Effectiveness study for Anxiety and Related Symptoms) study at Florida International University (FIU). Kids FACE FEARS is a PCORI-sponsored, multi-site project that compares face-to-face and self-administered online delivery of short-term, evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for youth anxiety in pediatric health settings. She is also coordinating the Coronavirus and the Family Study at FIU. This is a large, multi-site study examining the impact of COVID-19 related stressors on family functioning, adjustment, and child mental health. Prior to this, she worked as case manager while also volunteering with the Advancing Child Competencies by Extending Supported Services (ACCESS) for Families program at FIU. Hanan graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 2016 from FIU with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Psychology and completed a minor in Marketing.

Hanan’s main research interests focus on providing quality care and services to traditionally underserved youths and families that have experienced disasters and adversity, especially refugee, immigrant, and minority youths and families. More specifically, she is interested in: (1) understanding the barriers and facilitators influencing marginalized populations’ access to quality care, (2) evaluating and developing innovative technology-based and/or community-based approaches to improve these populations’ access to and quality of care, and (3) exploring methods to advance resilience among individuals facing adversity.
